Arabic: a language to understand a culture

During the Middle Ages, many Arabic words entered the Italian language, especially in sectors in which the Arabs excelled: navigation, commerce, mathematics, astronomy and medicine.
Today, Arabic is the fifth most widely spoken language in the world, with over 300 million speakers. It is more widely spoken than French and German and is one of the official languages of the United Nations.
It is written from right to left and has the unique characteristic of being a language with many consonants but not many vowels. Arabic words are rooted in guttural consonants and are only written in italics. Alongside modern standard Arabic (“MSA”), which is taught in schools and used by the media, there is also spoken Arabic, made up of a wide range of dialects that the natives of the various geographical areas learn spontaneously from birth. Today, standard Arabic is used for almost all written work; it is also the language used in formal speeches, in radio and television broadcasting, in official announcements and political proclamations, as well as in all cultural and educational fields.
